Berlin bir turist için geçmişi ve bugünüyle başdöndürücü bir kent. 1961 yılının 13 Ağustos günü, geceyarısını biraz geçe, Berlin’i 28 yıl boyunca ikiye ayıracak duvarın inşasına başlandığında, kimse bu girişimin bu kadar ileri gideceğini tahmin etmemişti. Tamamlandığında, kentin batısıyla doğusunu 160 kilometre boyunca birbirinden soyutlayacak bu duvar, Berlinliler için, birkaç satır yukarıdaki gibi şakalara konu olmakla birlikte, aslında yıllarca paranoyanın, baskının, şizoid kimliğin ve tutsaklığın kanlı canlı bir sembolü oldu. Rengarenk duvar resimlerinin yapıldığı batı tarafının hemen arkasında, doğuda, bu engeli aşmak isteyen herkese aynı derecede acımasız ölüm kol geziyordu. Dikenli teller, tek bir işaretle saldırıya hazır köpekler, gözetleme kulelerinde göz kırpmadan tetiğe dokunacak sınır nöbetçileri doğuya özgüydü. Yıllar içinde duvarı tam beş bin kişi aşmak istedi. Sadece 1600’ü başarabildi. Çoğu yakalandı, 191’i öldürüldü.

Şimdi Turizmin Parçası



Soğuk Savaş’ın sonunda yıkılarak kimileri tarafından hatıra eşyası olarak satılan, bazı bölümleri sergilenmek üzere dünyanın farklı müzelerine götürülen ve büyük bir bölümü yol yapımında kullanılan bu Utanç Duvarı’nın ortadan kaldırılmasından 16 yıl sonra, bugün artık geriye kalanlar kentin tarihi ve turizminin önemli bir parçası. Doğu ile batının birleşmesinden sonra Berlin, büyük bir değişim ve gelişim süreci içine girdi. Gerek sosyal hayat, gerekse mimaride, yaşamın her alanında kendini yeniledi, küllerinden yeniden doğdu.

Berlin, güçlü bir kimliğe sahip bir kent. Dinamizmi, enerjisi tartışılmaz. Sanki tüm bu yaşananlar, onu tetikte ve uyanık tutuyor gibi. Bir zamanların bölünmüş toprakları, şimdi Avrupa’nın en pahalı arazileri. Berlin’in son 15 yıldır ufkundan eksik olmayan bir şey varsa, o da vinçler. İstanbul silueti minareler ve kubbelerse, Berlin’inki de kentin her yerinden gökyüzüne uzanan, günbatımını süsleyen bu inşaat makineleri. Kent büyük bir şantiye görünümünde. Neredeyse II. Dünya Savaşı’nın sonundan beri bu durum pek fazla değişmedi. Ancak birleşmeden sonra büyük bir artış gösterdi. Oteller, bankalar, büyükelçilikler, büyük şirketlerin ultra modern binaları ve yeni sanat galerileri kentin çehresini tamamıyla değiştirdi.

Özellikle duvarın geçtiği Postdamer Platz, bir çöl kadar ıssızken, yakın zamanda Marriott ve Ritz Carlton otelleri tamamlandı. Bir taraftan Rusya’daki Yahudiler Berlin’e dönerken, bir taraftan da sinagogların restore edilmesi, müzelerin ve anıtların inşa edilmesi de kentin Yahudi kültürünü yeniden kucakladığının bir göstergesi.



Berlin’in iflasın eşiğinde bir kent olduğunu söylemek iyimserlik olur. Kent iflas etmiş durumda. Ancak sosyal yaşam, kültür ve sanattaki zenginlik halkın daha kötü günleri göz önüne alarak, bu ekonomik sıkıntıyı görmezliğe gelmesinde etkili. Tarih ve miras bilinci gelişmiş bir toplum. Demokratik Alman Cumhuriyeti dönemine ait görkemli mimari bir miras gibi korunuyor ve hatta eski tarzdaki trafik lambalarının değiştirilmesi durumunda Berlinliler ayaklanabiliyorlar. Gençlere göre Berlin, biraz New York gibi. Çünkü gece hayatını sınırlayan saatler, hayatı erteleyen sınırlar yok. Duvar nedeniyle, her semtte belirgin bir karakter oluşmuş. Yine duvar
nedeniyle, zamanında kentte üç opera ve iki hayvanat bahçesi açılmış.

Bugün Berlin’de oturan her yedi kişiden biri göçmen. Avrupa’daki eşçinsellerin en özgürce yaşadıkları birkaç kentten biri Berlin. Aklımıza kazılı disiplinli, açık vermeyen ve toleranssız Alman portresinden çok daha farklı bir tablo çıkıyor karşınıza.
